President's
Message |
This is an exciting time to be a
member of the Central Ohio Chapter of the
International Coach Federation. The Board
of Directors has been incredibly active in taking
our chapter to the next level. Many times
the recipients of change are not aware of how much
effort goes into the process of change so I want
to take this opportunity to bring you up to date
on the progress we have made this
year.
First, the Education Committee,
focusing on building coaching capacity and led by
Jessika Ferm, has expanded program offerings by
soliciting speakers who have national reputations
(including some of our own) and by offering
tele-classes taught by international
facilitators. Dedicating
numerous hours to a rigorous selection process,
this group identified a new location for our
chapter meetings which will allow for networking
after meetings, something many chapter members
found lacking with our former venue.
Next, Molly Luffy, your
President-Elect, took on the daunting task of
coordinating the website redesign. After
guiding the board through a visioning process and
vendors through an RFP process, the new look was
launched at the end of August and reflects an
enhanced professional image. This new look, along
with the ease of access to coaching resources
including our member profiles, is crucial to
expanding our profession in the greater Central
Ohio community.
The Public Relations Committee, led
by Kassie Steegman, has also been engaged in
creating awareness about coaching in the Columbus
community.
Partnering with HRACO (Human Resource
Association of Central Ohio), Kassie and Rita
Gallagher were able to negotiate an opportunity to
present on coaching at their August "Dining with
the Experts" luncheon. (See the
Business Coaching article below) Kassie and
her team are now exploring possibilities for a
three hour workshop on coaching.
Additionally, we also have to thank Kassie
and John Herr for this first ever chapter
newsletter, now available to anyone who visits our
website.
Think of the possibilities! It was
their drive and inspiration that made it all
happen.
Our Membership Committee, led by
Kelly LeFevre, has also been active in designing
strategies for re-engaging past members and
recruiting new members. We now
have a guiding process for ensuring that both new
and old members are kept up to date with the
organizational events.
Stabilizing our Board of Directors
and serving in advising capacities to the various
projects and committees are Nancy Quinn, Jerry
Browning, and John Herr. Their
tireless commitment and energy have helped to
sustain our momentum through the
summer.
We look different, we feel
different, we are different. Evolution
does not come without a change of
perspective. Letting go
of our worldview allows us to respond
to all that we can become. I want to
personally thank all the teams and individuals who
have made this an exciting year to be part of
COC.
You have an incredible team leading this
evolution and I am truly proud to have been part
of the experience.

"Selling and Marketing
Your Coaching Services in an Ethical and Dignified
Manner"
Most coaches view sales and
marketing as, at best, a toleration...a necessary
evil to building a coaching business and achieving
their personal goals and dreams. More often,
Sales and Marketing is viewed as "sleazy,"
"distasteful," even "unethical." After this
presentation, coaches will make a complete shift
and really "get" that sales and marketing is
giving, loving, attractive and FUN (Yes Fun!) for
both them and their prospective clients.

"The Coach's Call: Helping Others
Live into Their Deepest Purpose"
A primary privilege of coaching is clients
entrusting their coaches with their inner longing
to make a difference with their work and life. The
coach takes this issue both at face value, and as
a window into the competencies that comprise
self-knowledge. This session focuses on a coach's
self-knowledge, and how it supports the life and
work purposes of clients. It highlights the daily
requirement to live and work through values and
with purpose, and how to help your clients do the
same through self-discovery techniques. This
interactive lecture, laced with dialogue and
demonstration, addresses those coaching
opportunities that impact identity and character.

"Feedback for Success in
Leadership and Business"
 The presentation will feature skills
and interactive experiences from Unifying
Solutions Feedback Program. Timely, relevant
feedback results in effective communication,
increased morale, and success for goals. Suzanne
utilizes innovative methods by combining engaged
body posturing and language structures for direct
conversations and handling difficult
conversations. Participants will be provided with
a variety of effective tools for immediate
application.

Barbara
Braham, Ph.D., MCC
"Applying a Devlopmental Lens to Coaching"
Given the complexity and rate of change that
today's leaders face, they can find themselves "in
over their heads." This is often a literal
description of where they find themselves.
In other words, they are being asked to think and
behave from a developmental stage that is beyond
where they are. In these situations, for
coaching to be most beneficial, the coach needs to
take a developmental approach. Barbara will
explain what a developmental approach means and
introduce us to conventional and post-conventional
stages of
development. |

"The Myths and Realities of
Coaching"
Coaching as a
professional field of practice continues to expand
and increase in popularity with both organizations
and the general public as evidenced by an
invitation to lead a roundtable discussion on the
topic of coaching at the HRACO (Human Resource
Association of Central Ohio) meeting. The goal
of the presentation was to discuss some of the
misunderstandings often held about coaching as
well as illuminate the purpose, value and benefits
of coaching.
Despite an expanding level of
sophistication about coaching services, many
consumers of coaching services rely mostly on the
marketing materials and personal interactions with
potential vendors to make their decisions about
coaching.
A sub-goal for our presentation was to help
clients differentiate between the range of
coaching services and their applicability to
business environments by exposing several of the
common myths about coaching. I am sure that as
coaches the myths we chose seem fairly intuitive
yet we as a professional group must continue to
raise the bar for a greater understanding of
coaching.
These premises guided our discussion with
the HRACO group.
Our myths and realities seemed to
theme around 3 areas; distinctions about coaches,
the coaching process, and selecting a coach. In the
theme of distinctions about coaches, our goal was
to communicate the value of certification,
emphasizing that there is a need for a balance
between training and mentored practice. We also
delineated the differences between coaching,
therapy and consulting by underscoring coaching's
focus on the future, developing one's agenda, and
sustained change. In
discussing the coaching process, we emphasized
that coaching was not expedient nor simply used
for problem situations instead highlighting that
sustained change and reaching one's full potential
is a process that takes place over time. We also
related the importance of self-awareness and inner
guidance which contributes to a deeper
understanding of self and lasting change. Finally,
we concluded with suggestions for choosing a coach
referring the group to our website for additional
information to support the
choice.
Questions from the audience focused
on the themes of coaching outcomes, dealing with
difficult situations from a coaching perspective,
and finding resources related to coaching. In
answering the coaching outcomes questions, we
related evidence provided through return on
investment studies as well as specific measures
that companies were able to achieve through
coaching.
Included in this group were; productivity
measures, retention, team satisfaction,
relationship improvement, etc.
During the discussion of specific difficult
situations, the Public Relations team was able to
clarify the issues and offer suggestions for
resolution of the issue. Once
again, we referred the group back to our website
for coaching resources.
The changes our organization has
made in the past 6 months to expand upon our
professional image - most particularly the new
website is creating a high return on
investment as there were numerous openings for us
to refer this client base to the website for
additional resources. However,
the biggest opportunity for us as coaches is to
continue to provide value and distinction as we
assist our clients in making and sustaining change
whether that change is addressing recurring issues
or maximizing potential.

"Creating the
Life You Really Want"
"Thoughts become
things. Choose the good ones." Mike
Dooley
Welcome to another
fabulous, heart thumping, feet stomping day on
planet earth. You're invited to the best day
of your life, today! At this party you will be
deliberately creating the life you want. The
game we'll be playing is called by many names:
This is Your Life, the Imagination Game, Live Out
Loud. Well, you get the idea. Once you play
the game, name it whatever you like.
1.
Think about what you really want,
paint a picture in your mind of living your
dream. Something like this: "As I leap out
of bed, I go jogging on the shores of Maui knowing
that my Learjet is ready to take me to my next
speaking engagement back on the mainland."
After talking with the audience, autographing my
newest book, I go for a massage. Knowing
that I have plenty of time I decide to wander
through my favorite bookstore before reconnecting
with my best friend and my family who adore
me.
2. Talk out
loud as if you are already living your
wildest dreams. Tell your pet, talk to your face
in mirror, call your Mom. "Hi Mom, I'm having a
fabulous time here in India. I just finished bike
riding through the countryside with the love of my
life. We met the most amazingly peaceful
spiritual leader. She invited us to her home
and shared with us the secret of
life." The
possibilities are endless in this game and only a
thought away. Lucky us, each day we have the
incredible opportunity to create the life we
want. Our job is to generate thoughts about
what we really want and when paired with revved up
feelings, the Law of Attraction responds and our
life starts soaring. Enjoy the ride!
This fascinating game is
based on the Law of Attraction presentation that I
shared in April at the COC meeting. As a
refresher the main points are listed
below.
1. GET CLEAR
ABOUT WHAT YOU REALLY WANT Start with
where you are, and then move from general wants --
such as fulfilling work, vibrant health, a loving
relationship -- to the specific
details.
2. GIVE ATTENTION TO YOUR
DREAMS.
Savor 5-10 minutes each day visualizing the
details: see yourself in the picture and feel that
joy of having what you want. Act it out,
shout it out, create a vision board, tell the
world! The important part of this process is
generating aliveness within, which stimulates a
strong, vibrational current to which the Law of
Attraction responds.
3. LIVE YOUR
DREAMS Live your dreams to any degree
possible, with every step out of bed, with every
purchase you make, with every conversation you
have, with every hello and goodbye. Live in
the perspective of the person in your
dreams. Always move in the direction of your
dreams. When negative thoughts and feelings get
stirred turn toward a better feeling thought, and
then another and another until you are back in
alignment with your heart's desire.
4. LIVE IN
APPRECIATION for the abundance that is
already yours and celebrate the wonders of each
new day.
The joy of creating the
life you really want is endlessly amusing,
incredibly fulfilling and wildly energizing.
So try the Imagination Game today and find the
thrill of letting this be the best day of your
life.
